Death toll from tropical storm Ana in southern Africa rises to 77


The death toll from storm anna has risen to 77 after it wreaked devastation on three southern African countries who are still struggling to repair damaged infrastructure and help thousands of victims bringing torrential rains. The storm first made landfall in Madagascar on Monday before continuing to Mozambique and Malawi. 

The highest death toll is in Madagascar with 48 deaths which were declared a state of national disaster. On Thursday 18 people were killed in Mozambique while 11 have died in Malawi. In all three countries, tens of thousands of homes have been damaged many trapping people in the rubble, rivers washing away bridges submerged fields, and destroying the livelihoods of rural families in Madagascar. 

Over 130,000 people have played their homes. In the capital, the schools and gyms were turned into emergency shelters but the danger is not over Mozambique has warned that another storm named bansuri has formed over the Indian ocean and is expected to make landfall in the coming days up to six tropical cyclones are expected before the rainy season ends in March.
