Lebanon's economic crisis: US plans additional military aid of $67 million


Lebanon continues to struggle under a financial crisis in the aftermath of the deadly civil war. The currency has crashed and banks remain paralyzed. This has been forced to depend on foreign aid. Now the united states are further planning to assist Lebanon by supporting members of the Lebanese military the U.S. the state department has sent a notification to congress which intends to add livelihood support for 67 million U.S. dollars as foreign military funding for Lebanon citing economic turmoil and social unrest in the country. 

In August last year in the same months, U.S. troops withdrew from the country. The Biden administration pledged some hundred million dollars in humanitarian assistance for Lebanon. Later in October, another 67 million funding was made to assist Lebanese troops. Last week the U.S. provided 40 million additional humanitarian assistance with all the aid. The u.s became the largest donor of humanitarian assistance. Political instability long has plagued Lebanon. 

The 2020 blast which rocked the country's capital Beirut has worsened the crisis. Key positions in the government of the prime minister, president, and even the speaker of parliament occupied by people with different religious affinities have now resulted in frequent internal conflict. Several anti-government protests have also dented Lebanon the chance to have a long-term revival plan for its economy.
